COLD CALLING
This is a timely reminder, as the warmer days approach, from the police about 'cold
callers' to your home. This time of the year sees an increase is casual labour calling
at homes with the view to undertake DIY jobs such as cleaning and repairing drives,
gardening and tree cutting. The advice from the police is to keep your business local
so if you experience trouble with any workmanship you will have a chance to challenge
them. This will be almost impossible to do with casual labour who do not reside in
the area. You are encouraged to contact the police with details of any individuals
and their vehicles being used by 'cold callers'. If you have information about any
crime, phone the police on 0845 456 7000 or you can call anonymously to the independent
charity CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111. For general information about Neighbourhood Watch
nationally see the www.ourwatch.org.uk website.

02 June 2010
Well, it was certainly a night of unwelcome excitement. Windows were broken in three separate houses, one in Stoke Road and two in Lower Henlade. Three youths were seen and one even knocked on a resident’s door to ask where he was! It seems one of their number was injured and they wanted to call for an ambulance. Another resident heard a female voice, so there may have been more than three of them.
All this took place somewhere around 3.45 a.m. and later on a coat was found - complete with passport and driving licence! - outside the property where the lad had knocked on the door. Our resident, not having at that stage heard of the shenanigans during the night, duly handed it straight in to the Police (who were subsequently made aware of its significance.)
Police and Community support officers responded quickly to residents’ calls and were very much in evidence over the course of the day. It is looking more like drunken youth than professional burglars so we are hoping they won’t be returning. (They didn’t know where they were, so maybe they can’t find their way back!!)
If you saw or heard anything that night (Wednesday 02 June, early morning) and haven’t mentioned it to anyone yet, please tell the Police - details above - or contact us as it will help to build up a picture of events.
...... And don’t forget to lock up securely at all times.
The bulletin below was issued shortly after the incident but Police subsequently stated that no further action would be taken due to lack of evidence (!)

A Night of Vandalism - Did YOU see or hear anything?
04 June 2010
Please find detailed below a series of crimes that have occurred in the
Henlade area:
Overnight 1-2 June - Lower Henlade attempt made to enter a property.
A window was broken and attempt made to get through metal mesh. No entry was gained.
During the morning of 2 June - Stoke Road, Henlade. Attempt entry was made. The victim
had heard a noise in the middle of the night but thought it was an animal. However
in the morning found a rear patio door had been hit with a shovel causing damage.
No entry was gained to the property.
Overnight 1-2 June - Stoke Road, Henlade. Motor vehicle had a window broken.
Overnight 1-2 June - Lower Henlade criminal damage caused to a property when a window
was broken.
If you have any information about such incidents or suspicious activity please telephone
the police as quickly as possible on the general contact number 0845-456-7000

11pm Friday 12 November 2010
Seeing the security light come on at Orchard End, Stoke Road, the owners asked if
they could “help” the two youths seen outside. The youths made off pretty quickly,
shouting back that they only wanted to relieve themselves (not their words!).
However, if that had been their only intention, one would have thought that Musgrave
farmyard just opposite might have given them a bit more privacy than a house with
a light on ......
(Not that I wish to encourage the use of our property as a loo! - Gill)
The Police were informed and said they would try and come along, but later said they
had been busy with emergencies so were not able to attend.
If anyone else noticed anything, please let us know.
Suspicious pair challenged - 12 November 2010
Christmas and the run up to it is a busy time of year for everyone, including the
criminal. Police ask for your assistance in reducing opportunist and seasonal crimes.
1.
Always make sure that your home looks occupied even when you are out. Leave a light
on, using a timer switch, and perhaps a radio on a talk channel. Lock windows and
doors and ensure that any alarms are set.
2. When out shopping don't put items in
the car on display. If you have to put them in the car whilst you go off again, then
ensure they are put in a covered boot area.
3. There are some offenders who relish
the idea of taking wrapped presents from beneath a Christmas tree. Don't let them
have their fun - remove temptation from out of sight of windows.
We do have a small
supply of leaflets covering this seasonal crime - contact Lindsey in the NHW office
for copies.

28 December 2010 updated 04 February 2011 and 21 March 2011
Some of you were wondering what happened at the front of Henlade Lodge the other day.
In the last few years it’s had a rough time; cars smashed through the gates twice, a tree fell on the wall from inside, cars drove into and knocked down the posts at the front on two occasions, and now this!
It seems the Police were pursuing this car in the Priorswood area of Taunton at around midnight on 27/28 December but lost it.
Neither the occupiers nor the neighbours opposite (Roger and I!) heard anything. The smashed wall and equally smashed car were discovered next morning before sunrise in this state, with both airbags inflated but no humans around.
This happened, by the way, AFTER most of the snow had melted, though you can see some remaining ice in the picture.
04 February 2011
Apparently the car is registered to a company in Taunton and it was being driven by an employee. They didn’t want to give the employee’s name but their insurers are paying for the damage.
21 March 2011
As you can see, it has been repaired now and is looking very smart!

We know we mustn’t dial 999 for trivial reasons but when IS it right to do so?
Definitely ring 999 if:
·
|
you are in fear of your own or someone else’s safety;
|
·
|
there is an intruder in your house;
|
·
|
you are witnessing a fight or a serious crime.
|
But is it also OK to ring 999 if you are witnessing a less serious crime or have good reason to think a crime is being committed.
In this case the Police can decide whether they have the resources to attend immediately or not. You will have given them the opportunity to catch a perpetrator red-handed. If they are dealing with something else more serious then they won’t come - but you will have done your bit and given them the choice.

A number of offences have taken place recently targeting the elderly. In general
the offenders claim to be from the water board. They keep the victim busy whilst
another offender enters and takes items such as cash and jewellery. Some other offences
have occurred where the offenders purport to be from the gas board or Transco.
We would emphasise that there has not been a reported problem in this part of the
county to date - however it is thought that these are criminals who move through
different areas and could come this far south. Please ensure that residents are aware
of all the usual precautions.
STOP CHAIN CHECK is good to remember.
STOP - is anyone expected - is the back door locked?
CHAIN - put the chain on before opening the door.
CHECK - ask for ID. Close the door leaving the caller outside whilst you check the
ID by phone.
IF IN DOUBT - KEEP THEM OUT.
If you think a caller is suspicious then call the police immediately using either
the 101 or emergency 999 number. If you have information about any crime, phone the
police on 101 or you can call anonymously to the independent charity CRIMESTOPPERS
0800 555 111.
For general information about Neighbourhood Watch nationally see the www.ourwatch.org.uk
website.

New Non Emergency number
From 19th September 2011 you will be able to contact Avon and Somerset Police by
calling 101. 101 will not replace 999, which will continue to be used for emergencies.
It has, however, replaced the 0845 number. Calls to 101 from landlines and mobiles
cost 15 pence per call, no matter what time of day you call or how long your call
lasts.
One of the recently-installed posts outside Henlade Lodge has been knocked over.
It happened between 4:15 and 4:45 pm on Monday 30 April 2012 and was thought to have
been caused by a blue lorry reversing.
At least it wasn’t the whole wall this time but it is getting rather tiresome for
the owners to have to keep repairing the front of their property!

This message is sent to remind members of the rural community that there are people
in the area calling door to door trying to obtain scrap metal. There is a possibility
that such people could be involved in criminal activity as well.
Police would be keen to have details of sightings of any suspicious vehicles/persons
and particularly those calling in relation to scrap metal.
If you have any such callers, please take as much detail as possible such as description
of person(s), description of vehicle(s) and in particular registration numbers. You
are asked to call this information in to the police immediately to give officers
best chance of being able to locate persons - please call direct to the general number
0845-456-7000 asking the call handler to mark the call ‘NHW’.
Officers do have details of one vehicle that they are actively seeking already that
was reported by members of Neighbourhood Watch in the area. This is a flatbed vehicle
on a ‘54’ plate and the last digits of the registration are FXM. Any further sightings
of such a vehicle would also be welcome.

NOTICE BOARD VANDALISED
Nothing could dampen our spirits on the morning of the BBQ but it was a bit disappointing
to discover the glass in the right hand door of the notice board had been smashed.
Then, while we were getting very damp indeed clearing up the next morning, it seems
the culprit(s) came back in the pouring rain to break the other glass!
The Parish Council agreed to pay for the repair and the reglazed doors are now back
in place.
Keep your fingers crossed they don’t come back ...
As a footnote, it appears the notice board in Thornfalcon has since suffered the
same fate.
Has anyone seen our Speedwatch signs? Two of them are gone!
The one in Greenway Lane is still there but the ones near Arundels corner and in
Stoke Road have disappeared!
It happened some time prior to 27 October 2012.

Ringmaster Email - SOMERSET WEST - G080 31012012
This is a general warning message to all members relating to bogus callers and cold calling.
There have been a number of reports of an increase in cold callers or bogus callers.
Most of these seem to be taking the form of contact by phone or by Email and can cover a range of topics. Some reports have been made of calls from companies alleging there is a problem with your home computer, or that someone in your household has an outstanding compensation claim against them, or that there is a need to check bank details, or that you have not applied for grants or compensation yourself. The list is endless.
There are a few simple rules to help avoid falling victim to such cons:
·
|
If the offer sounds too good to be true then it probably is.
|
·
|
NEVER give out personal information over the phone. In other words - just say no thank you and terminate the call.
|
·
|
If it’s an Email coming through to you with an address that you do not recognise then do not open it but delete it straight away - in case it contains a virus.
|
As always, don't have dealings with cold callers whether they are selling items or services, or whether they want to do work at the property (gutter cleaning etc). If you are looking for work to be done then contact companies yourself through local phone books and get more than one written quotation - personal recommendation from valued friends or family members can also be an advantage.
Whilst we do not wish to instil fear, we do think that taking the usual simple precautions will assist in preventing people becoming victims of crime or scams. A limited number of information leaflets on this type of matter are available from the Neighbourhood Watch Office at Bridgwater 01823-363348.
If you have information about any crime, phone the police on 101 or you can call anonymously to the independent charity CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111. For general information about Neighbourhood Watch nationally see the www.ourwatch.org.uk website.

Break-in at Thurlbear
G112 29012013
Overnight of 26-27 January a break occurred at a Livery Stable at Thurlbear.
Access was gained through an office window and then removed a set of keys to open
the tack room. Inside, damage was caused to shutters but there was nothing stolen.

G098 29012013
This message has been sent on behalf of police officers looking into
a number of offences relating to the sale of tools door to door.
There have been a
number of incidents recently where persons have been calling on communities trying
to sell tools, including chain saws, hedge trimmers etc, from the back of vans. Tools
have been later found to be sub-standard.
Firstly officers would like to remind everyone
that they do not encourage householders to buy any items from callers at the door.
It is much better to go to formal suppliers and to ensure that guarantees are in
place if appropriate.
Secondly they are also keen to receive information about any
persons that do come calling in the area - particularly if they are selling items
door to door. Please forward any information direct to the police on their general
number 101.
G119 31012013
I refer to message number G098 sent on 29 January 2013 relating
to persons selling tools door to door.
Police Officers would like to offer their sincere
thanks for all the information that has been forthcoming as a result of the message.
Much of this was from members of Watch Schemes and has enabled officers to collate
quite a thorough picture.
It is now thought that the persons involved have moved away
from this area. However please do not become complacent and you are asked to continue
to report suspicious matters direct to the police when they are noticed - using the
general number 101.
Thank you.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - SOMERSET WEST - G1230 27112013
This message is sent to members of all schemes with a seasonal warning regarding vehicle crime. There is often an increase in vehicle crime at this time of year and we are sorry to inform you that it appears this trend has already started.
There have been reports of shopping being stolen from vehicles, one or two instances of Christmas presents stolen; reports of vehicles being left insecure and/or with items on display such as handbags, mobile phones, MP3 players and even laptops. Even a tax disc stolen from a motor cycle in the past week.
Some instances of vehicles being stolen as well - one of the latest occurred in Ilminster when the victim left a set of keys in the works vehicle, went to speak to another workman and then saw the vehicle being driven off. There was a white Volvo V70 in the vicinity at the time of the office - officers would be keen to have any information on a vehicle of this description acting suspiciously and think this vehicle could be anywhere across the county.
Vehicles can be viewed as shop windows, so:
* Don't leave any items on display
* Lock doors, windows and set any security device
* Don't leave keys in the car even for a short time
* Whether at home or work keep keys out of sight.
The NHW office stocks items such as tamper proof tax disc holders and vehicle watch stickers - contact Lindsey for order form on 01823-363348 or click `reply' to this message.
If you have information about any crime, phone the police on 101 or you can call anonymously to the independent charity CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111. For general information about Neighbourhood Watch nationally see the www.ourwatch.org.uk website.

RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - SOMERSET WEST - Somerset Message]
GENERAL REMINDER REGARDING CALLERS AT THE DOOR - please remember not to have dealings with any unsolicited callers whether they are at the door, calling by phone, sending Emails or writing to you. They may be offering to buy or sell items; perhaps offering to provide crime prevention advice, repair guttering or cut trees down; or they may ask to gain access inside the property. Whatever the excuse do not have dealings with them in any form. Remember all suspicious activity or callers should be reported as soon as possible to the police on 101 or in an emergency 999.
SEASONAL REMINDER - the end of the month will find many people enjoying Halloween. However we are aware that some people prefer not to have Halloween revellers at the door on this evening. We have flyers at the office that aim to reduce such callers and if you would like copies, please contact Lindsey at the NHW office either by `replying' to this Email or by telephone on 01278-644799.
By the beginning of November we will see Firework celebrations and of course the Carnival Season. The police ask that if you are going out to enjoy or take part these events, you take care to ensure that properties are kept secure and alarms activated where they are fitted. Perhaps also consider leaving lights on timers or a radio on a talk channel to make properties appear as if they are occupied.
Some security items such as timers are available at a competitive price from the NHW office, again contact Lindsey direct if you would like details/order form.
If you have information about any crime, phone the police on 101 or you can call anonymously to the independent charity CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111. For general information about Neighbourhood Watch nationally see the www.ourwatch.org.uk website.

. Check a caller is a genuine employee by calling the company on a number you've looked up independently. Don't use the number they provide on their ID badge
. Telephone fraudsters can stay on the line after you hang up. Wait at least 10 minutes or use a different line to make any other calls
STOP IT -
Don't share your personal information
. Personal information includes: financial details, your full name, date of birth, address and travel plans

A spate of suspicious incidents - updated 02 November 2017
Some crimes are well down on the usual figures but Trading Standards offer warnings
and advice about the increasing number of scams that COVID-19 has prompted.
